Atlético Ottawa strengthened their hold on third place in the Canadian Premier League on Saturday, fending off the Halifax Wanderers for a critical 1-0 win in the Maritimes.

Breaking a three-game winless streak, Atleti returned to the win column and widened the gap between them and the fifth-place Wanderers to 11 points with just four matches left in the regulars eason.

The visiting Ottawa, desperate to break their goalscoring slump, came flying out of the gates, swarming the Wanderers' box right in front of the Kitchen in the opening moments.

Just as the clock passed four minutes, the Wanderers struggled to deal with a looping ball just outside the penalty area, and Atleti's Ballou Tabla latched onto it. Tabla took a good touch over the head of centre-back Finn Linder, setting up a one-on-one chance that he slotted calmly past Marco Carducci for his tenth goal of the CPL season.

After falling behind, the Wanderers were arguably the stronger side, creating several dangerous opportunities in the latter half of the first 45. Lorenzo Callegari had the best chance of the half, with a wide-open look at goal in the box, but he couldn't settle the ball enough to hit the frame.

As the second half progressed, the Wanderers found themselves pinned back by an aggressive Atleti press. They tried to play quickly through it, but even when they got into the final third, Halifax couldn't get touches on the ball in the most dangerous areas.

Ottawa defender Julian Dunn, deployed in the starting lineup for just the second time this year, was a force in the box, getting his head on most of the home side's attempted crosses and repeatedly clearing the ball.

Ultimately, Halifax's attempts proved too feeble to crack a well-organized Ottawa defence, and it ended 1-0. The Wanderers had generated 13 shots, but put just two of them on target as their finishing let them down on a handful of occasions. 

Vanni Sartini's Wanderers now stare down the final four matches of the season — which includes a trip to play Forge in Hamilton, and a home game against league leaders Cavalry — where they might need to win out. They finished this match six points out of the fourth and final playoff spot, before Vancouver FC's match later on Saturday evening.
