RECAP+HIGHLIGHTS: Cavalry FC vs. Vancouver Whitecaps | 2026 Telus Canadian Championship 🇨🇦 🏆

OneSoccer Staff
Highlights

Cavalry FC's TELUS Canadian Championship campaign came to an end on Monday, as they drew 1-1 with the Vancouver Whitecaps, but ultimately bowed out as they lost the quarterfinal tie 5-2 on aggregate.

It was a spirited showing from the Cavs, who held Thomas Müller and the Whitecaps mostly at bay in front of a raucous crowd of 6,011 at ATCO Field. However, they weren't able to capitalize on their chances and couldn't overturn a deficit built in the first leg last Wednesday, conceding in the end to a former Cav in Mihail Gherasimencov.

Things started well for Cavalry, who drew a yellow card from Vancouver defender Mathias Laborda just 20 seconds in. Before the first minute was up, Ali Musse nearly scored for the hosts with a dangerous chance that keeper Isaac Boehmer had to save.

Going into the game down 4-1 on aggregate after last Wednesday's opener in Burnaby, Cavalry knew they had to attack quickly in order to give themselves a chance.

Both sides looked dangerous in spells throughout the game, which took on a wide-open tempo in the first half. Each team challenged the opposing keeper on a handful of occasions; Boehmer had to make a few outstanding saves, as Cavalry's direct play generated repeated one-on-one opportunities.

That said, the Whitecaps had plenty of chances of their own, ultimately outshooting the Cavs 12 to eight in the first half with 67.1 per cent possession. Cavalry, however, remained constantly dangerous on the counter-attack, thanks largely to the aggressive forward play of Tobias Warschewski, Goteh Ntignee and Ali Musse.

At last, Cavalry found a breakthrough with 15 minutes to play. Harry Paton picked up a long ball on the right side of the box, and he swept a cross back toward goal. Musse, unmarked in the penalty area, got his head to the ball and scored to give the CPL side life.

After the goal, Cavalry continued searching for more, pressing their MLS opponents with increasing desperation. However, that would be the only goal they could find in the end.

In fact, the Whitecaps put the tie to bed shortly before the 90 minutes were up, in somewhat ironic fashion. Mihail Gherasimencov, who was a star for Cavalry on loan last season, scored his first goal as a Whitecap into the ATCO Field net where he scored for the Cavs a year ago.

Gherasimencov picked up the ball outside the box and blasted it from distance, beating Nathan Ingham to secure his team's advancement.

So, much like last year, Cavalry leave the Canadian Championship with an odd feeling. They were eliminated on aggregate, but played very well in the second leg, and weren't beaten on the day.

In fact, in seven historical meetings between these sides, Vancouver have only won in 90 minutes twice, which may give Tommy Wheeldon Jr. and co. some solace. The Whitecaps are one of the best teams in the entire continent, and still sit on top of MLS's Western Conference, so the confidence gained from Monday's game may fuel Cavalry's own title chase in the Canadian Premier League.

The Whitecaps, meanwhile, now head to the semifinals, where they'll face fellow MLS side CF Montréal as they continue their bid for a fifth straight Voyageurs Cup title.

CPLSoccer.com Player of the Match

Ali Musse, Cavalry FC

The Cavalry winger looked like a man on a mission in this match, determined to score from minute one. He did, in the end, and took six other shots as he was Cavalry's most aggressive attacker and looked dangerous whenever the ball came to him.

What's Next?

The Whitecaps now head to the semifinals, where they'll play CF Montréal.

Cavalry, meanwhile, shift focus back to the CPL, where they host the Halifax Wanderers this Saturday, July 18 (3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT).
