Pacific downed Cavalry FC on penalties in the preliminary round of the 2023 Canadian Championship at Starlight Stadium on Thursday, setting up an all-BC derby with League 1 BC side TSS Rovers in the quarter-finals.

Cavalry got off to a strong start to this game, as 2022 Canadian Championship co-leading goalscorer, Myer Bevan, slotted home in the first half to make it 1-0 for the visitors.

Shortly before half time, however, Pacific managed to equalize, as Easton Ongaro opened his Pacific FC account off of a perfect set-piece delivery from Sean Young to get the home side back in it.

From there, the game would make it to the end of the 90 minutes all knotted up, setting up penalties.

There, Pacific managed to edge out their guests, as Emil Gazdov denied Daan Klomp on Cavalry's fourth kick, before Pacific, who shot first, won it through a cool penalty from Georges Mukumbilwa, as they avenged losing to York on penalties at home at this exact stage last year.

Now, they've set up a date with the plucky Rovers at Starlight Stadium in early May, where the League 1 BC side will be eager to build off of their magical 3-1 upset over Valour in midweek, while Pacific looks to make it back to the semi-finals for the second time.
