Can prospective signing Niklas Dorsch provide the balance Toronto FC’s midfield is missing?
Toronto FC looks set to bolster their midfield, as it was reported this week that they were on the verge of signing German midfielder Niklas Dorsch from 2. Bundesliga side FC Heidenheim, per Fabrizio Romano and Tom Bogert.

For a team that lost midfielder José Cifuentes at the end of June, as he returned to Rangers FC after the expiry of his one-year loan with TFC, this Dorsch arrival comes at a good time for a TFC team that was already thin in midfield before Cifuentes’s departure. They did well to fill part of the hole that Cifuentes left behind, recently bringing in midfielder Nelson Palacio in a cash-for-player trade from Real Salt Lake, but Dorsch’s signing is naturally a bigger statement given the reported cost. 
Based on the figures reported, which indicate that TFC will pay upwards of $4 million for his services, Dorsch looks set to become TFC’s third Designated Player after Djordje Mihailovic and Josh Sargent.
At first glance, there is a lot to like there, too. Having chosen to go for a more top-heavy approach with their first two DPs, signing a striker and an attacking midfielder, adding a midfielder in Dorsch seems to be a wise approach.
For a team that has never seemed to fully replace midfield metronome Michael Bradley after his decline and eventual departure, Dorsch certainly looks capable of filling those shoes, making this a crucial transaction for a TFC team that hasn’t been able to take the step forward that was expected of them after signing Mihailovic and Sargent in the past 12 months.
Not only have they accumulated just 16 points from their first 16 games of the MLS season and have already been eliminated from the Canadian Championship after an upset by CPL side Atlético Ottawa in the preliminary round of the competition, but they’ve scored just 23 goals in 17 games across all competitions.
At the very least, while the moves to bring in Mihailovic, Sargent and a proven attacker like Dániel Sallói (who has scored four goals and added three assists this season) weren’t expected to immediately vault TFC into contending status, it was hoped to at least make TFC more dangerous in attack.
Instead, this team has scored more than two goals in a game just six times this season, as they haven’t been able to use that firepower as intended.
No doubt, part of that will come down to coaching, which is why head coach Robin Fraser has been on the hot seat. With his team winless in 10 MLS games, along with the Canadian Championship elimination, many are wondering if he could soon be shown the door.
Given that TFC have earned just 0.92 points per game since he was hired at the beginning of 2025, winning just nine games across that span, there are certainly some questions to be asked there.
At the same time, it’s worth noting that while this TFC team have struggled to win under his tutelage, they’ve done a decent job of not losing games. They’ve drawn 21 of the 52 matches he’s taken charge of, which is not bad.
When looking at that, you can wonder if there’s a world where TFC could be close to making a breakthrough, one where they start to turn those draws into wins, easing pressure on Fraser.
And that’s where bolstering their midfield could be key. When looking at their team, they’ve certainly got the attacking pieces in Sargent, Mihailovic and Sallói, and they’ve got depth to support them in the form of Theo Corbeanu, Malik Henry, Derrick Etienne Jr., Emilio Aristizábal and Deandre Kerr.
Meanwhile, defensively, TFC have been okay, conceding 29 goals in 16 MLS games and 32 goals in 17 games across all competitions, but they’ve kept clean sheets in back-to-back games since returning from the World Cup break - and you can’t forget that they signed Walker Zimmerman in the offseason and brought in the experienced Benjamín Kuscevic to bolster their centre-back ranks. So it’s not as if they’re in a bad place there, personnel-wise.
In midfield, meanwhile, TFC’s lone natural options on first-team contracts after Cifuentes’s departure were Jonathan Osorio and Alonso Coello, which is why signing Palacio and now Dorsch is so key. 
Based on how they’d built their squad, the two things they were missing in midfield were players that could protect their defensive unit and progress the ball to their attackers. Coello and Osorio, who are more offensive-minded players, could do the latter, but even they found that hard to do, as it can be challenging to progress the ball if you’re not as solid defensively.
Dorsch, however, brings a profile that should help them in both departments.

Defensively, he had 59 tackles, 20 interceptions, 140 recoveries and won 112 duels (at a 58.6% rate) for Heidenheim in the Bundesliga last year, doing well to generate that output despite his team’s relegation from the German top-flight. For context, the tackles had him in the 85th percentile among players at his position in the league, the interceptions among the 58th percentile, the recoveries among the 93rd percentile and the duels among the 74th percentile (FotMob).

Offensively, meanwhile, he had excellent ball progression numbers, as he completed 872 passes (at an 88.8% rate) and completed 81 long balls (at a whopping 69.2% rate). And, more importantly, he created 24 chances (including five big chances) worth 2.64 Expected Assists, as he made sure his passes were dangerous ones (FotMob).

For context, his passing percentage had him in the 85th percentile, his long ball percentage in the 91st percentile, his chances created in the 75th percentile and his xA in the 71st percentile.
That’s key, because Dorsch brings the exact skills TFC could use more of in midfield. Based on his defensive figures, he should offer protection that could help TFC’s backline be even more robust, while offensively, he can bring the ball progression that should allow the likes of Mihailovic, Sargent and Sallói to get on the ball more in the final third.
Yet, that’s the big thing that stands out about Dorsch’s signing - he brings balance to the table, balance that TFC desperately needs. He won’t wow in terms of his output, as he scored just five goals and added just 12 assists in 133 appearances for Heidenheim, but he’ll do a lot of important work that could justify his status as a DP on this TFC team.
To understand what that means, consider this - in the seven games TFC have held opponents to one goal or fewer this year, they’ve won just two of those games, as they’ve often struggled to score in the games when they’ve actually been good defensively. Then, on the other end of the spectrum, in the six games they’ve scored two or more goals, they’ve only won two games, as they’ve also been unable to hold it down at the back when they do find some offensive juice.
Perhaps Dorsch’s arrival can help them find a balance between attacking and defending, and certainly his profile indicates that can be the case. Plus, as a bonus, it could push someone like Osorio higher up the pitch, especially with Palacio also coming in.

Of course, there’s a lot more that will go into Dorsch’s potential success with his new club, especially given how much they’ll lean on him to solve the issues they’ve had in midfield for a couple of years now - it won’t be an easy job for him to immediately come in and fix this team’s problems in central areas.
On paper, though, you can see why they’ve made this move to bring him in, as they’ll hope the solidity that he can provide in midfield will be a key cornerstone in their ongoing efforts to rebuild.

While they’ll have long odds to win their first trophy since 2022 this year, as they’re out of the Canadian Championship and won’t participate in Leagues Cup, they’re just three points out of a playoff spot, something they should be able to push for when Dorsch arrives and the rest of their team gets healthy.
